I use a 12-way rotary. Each of the 12 positions is mapped to a windows button (buttons 105 to 116). Changing the rotary position results in a short (not permanent!) button press. Each rotary position is connected to a function (ABS, TC1, TC2, MAP, ...), which then can be increased/decreased by a separate encoder. So with the rotary you choose ABS, with the encoder you then increase/decrease it.

Problem:
I want to permanently display the rotary position on my Dashboard, until it is changed again, so that I have a representation of the current function. So i.e., when I changed to rotary position 1, i want to permanently show "ABS". But because physically turning the knob only causes a short button press for a fraction of a second, i  need something like a "remember last key"-function.
