Need help with Adafruit Neotrellis 4x4

I am a complete noob with arduino and might be in over my head with this project I'm making. I have an Adafruit itsybitsy 32u4 with 2 Adafruit neotrellis boards attached by i2c. With my own sketch I have it working and recognized as a game controller but now I'm trying to get to work with simhub to display racing flags and spotter. I have tried to add it to SHCustomProtocol.h but cannot get it to compile with IDE 2.3.x or 1.8.x. I also tried to add it to Dev2.ino but then the buttons won't work. Any help would be awesome.
